US federal tax calculator

Wages plus capital gains, tax year 2025 (the return filed in 2026) -- federal tax only, standard deduction only.

Filing status

An estimate, computed in your browser — nothing you type here is sent anywhere. It applies the ordinary rules and ignores surcharge relief, set-offs and anything specific to your documents. The return we build from your Form 16 does not.

Total federal tax$10,714
Taxable income$75,000After the standard deduction
Ordinary taxable income$65,000
Tax on ordinary income$9,214
Long-term gain taxed (stacked)$10,000
Tax on the long-term gain$1,500
Total federal tax$10,714

Why a long-term gain can cost less than the rate suggests

Wages and short-term gains (held a year or less) are taxed together as ordinary income, through the same seven brackets from 10% up to 37%.

A long-term gain (held over a year) does not sit beside that income the way it might elsewhere -- it stacks on top of it. Your ordinary income fills the brackets first; the gain is then taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on where, cumulatively, it lands. That is why two people with the same total gain can owe very different amounts: it depends on what else they earned that year.

This tool applies the standard deduction only -- $15,000 single, $30,000 married filing jointly for 2025 -- and assumes no other income, no itemizing, and no state tax. It does not net a loss in one bucket against a gain in the other; enter a net gain in each.

Common questions

Is this the same engine the real return uses?

No -- this runs in your browser in plain JavaScript. The account-side tool computes in exact decimal arithmetic and is what any return is actually built from. The numbers should match closely, but this one is for a quick estimate, not a filing.

What about state tax?

Not included. State income tax rules vary enormously -- some states have none at all -- and are not built here yet.

Can I use this for Married Filing Separately or Head of Household?

Not yet -- only Single and Married Filing Jointly have bracket tables here today.
